A comforter helps babies to self-settle and is a cue to sleep. Muslins are the safest and best option because they are breathable, replaceable, transportable and suitable for all weathers.
You would be surprised how cold children get at night and how much of a contributing factor it is to not sleeping through. Think of them as what your baby wears to sleep. Choose one with the right TOG for the season and their room temperature, with an easy to use zip and without poppers, buttons or velcro.
A large cotton or bamboo blanket that has some stretch so it can be tucked over their chest and under the mattress on three sides to create a warm and secure pocket.
